Single Family Home Ownership Program The construction and renovation of single-family homes has been a key program of GMHC since 1971. Over the course of those four decades, approximately 1,500 homes have been made available to families who may not have been able to become homeowners. Most of the homes are purchased by people whose incomes are at or below 80% of the median income and first time homebuyers, creating a powerful opportunity that would not otherwise exist. A current focus of the Single Family Home Ownership program is the purchase, renovation and sale of foreclosed properties. GMHC works in partnership with the National Community Stabilization Trust, the Home Prosperity Fund, Minnesota Housing, the Family Housing Fund, suburban communities of Hennepin County, the City of Minneapolis and neighborhood organizations to make affordable single-family home ownership a reality for many who have formerly been left out of the ownership market. In addition to providing affordable housing for families, the program has had a highly positive impact on the stability and vitality of neighborhoods and has provided hundreds of jobs in the construction and building trades. During 2010, 47 homes were built and/or renovated and sold to owner/occupants with 45% sold to persons of color and 93% to first-time home buyers.
